Healthy, affordable, yet often neglected. read on to learn why daily water consumption is pertinent for overall good health.
The human body is composed of between 60 and 70% water. All bodily systems are dependent on water to function properly. These include the circulatory, respiratory, skeletal, muscular, digestive, integumentary (skin), cardiovascular, lymphatic, endocrine, urinary and reproductive systems. Cells need water to effectively communicate amongst each other. With a market focused heavily on selling caffeine-rich beverages, such as specialty coffee, energy drinks and soda, water has become the lesser choice. What people do not realize is the fact that water hydrates and with proper hydration, fatigue is not an issue. If fatigue is not an issue, they may not reach for that 3rd cup of java.
How much water is enough? It depends on many factors. If people work outside in the heat or perform physical exertion during sports or other forms of exercise, they will need more to make up for the loss during perspiration. Pregnant women or those residing at higher altitudes require more as well. Coffee, tea and alcohol are all diuretics, which deplete the body of water. If those beverages are consumed daily, additional water is needed for replenishment.
The bottom line is, urine should be pale yellow upon excretion. If it’s dark and cloudy, the body is in a state of dehydration. Dehydration can cause moodiness, confusion, dizziness, weakness, headaches, muscle aches and many other side effects. Starting the day with a few cups up plain water is a good habit to get into. It helps flush out toxins and will stimulate all bodily systems.
In addition to elimination and proper hydration, water has a host of other benefits.
Here are some, but certainly not all:
1) Radiant Skin- Since our skin is the largest organ, what we put in directly affects what comes out. When more water is consumed, the skin’s color and texture appears healthier. Water helps build new cells and keeps wrinkles and other blemishes at bay.
2) Joint Lubrication- When joints have proper hydration, there will be less aches and pains, associated with arthritic conditions, due to softer cartilage from water consumption.
3) Weight Management- When properly hydrated, the body does not crave as much food. As a result, one will eat less, lose weight, reduce fluid retention, increase fat metabolism and decrease visibility of cellulite by flushing out toxins.
The best water is filtered. Store it in glass or stainless steel when traveling around. If a water source is not an option, at least consume water-dense sources such as apples, watermelon, celery and lettuce. The goal is hydration; it is the key to optimum health!
