Managing Type 2 Diabetes the Natural Way

WRITTEN BY JAMIE DUVNJAK, CERTIFIED HEALTH COACH

My dad was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in 2014 and was told his only two options for controlling blood sugar were insulin injections or Metformin medication (generic name for Glucophage).  He chose the latter, but became increasingly weak, tired, depressed, and dizzy.  As a result, he shuffled his feet and fell on a regular basis.  He went to his doctor who suggested he increase his Metformin dosage. Following his doctor’s orders left him with dangerously high blood sugar and a drunk feeling where he was unable to safely drive.  This was when he said enough was enough.  He knew if he continued on the pills, the side effects could eventually kill him or someone else on the road.

Concurrently, I researched diabetic cookbooks and doctors who wrote books on this disease.  Out of approximately 1,200 reviews, Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s, The End of Diabetes: The Eat to Live Plan to Prevent and Reverse Diabetes received almost 5 stars.  I figured since he appeared on Dr. Oz, Good Morning America, and the Today Show, among many other radio shows and interviews over the years, he knew what he was talking about.  I felt at peace purchasing that one along with Diabetic Living Diabetes Meals by the Plate: 90 Low-Carb Meals to Mix & Match, which also received rave reviews.

Upon delivery of both books, he immediately followed Dr. Fuhrman’s advice and also began cooking nutritious recipes from his cookbook.  In addition, I encouraged my dad to join a local Fitness 19 gym.  He was determined to gain his strength back and feel like his healthy self again. Over the course of a little more than a year, he went from a weak 205 lbs. to a strong 155 lbs.  He currently weighs what he did when he was in Vietnam!  He says after his workouts he feels like “the hulk.”

With proper diet, exercise, and education, diabetes can be managed.  Check out my recommended books, do your research, decide what’s best for you, and listen to how your body feels.  If you decide on medication and experience side effects, consult your doctor right away.  Some people may feel fine taking medication.  This was not the case for my dad.  He’s so glad he took an alternative approach.  I feel grateful I was able to be a part of his positive transformation and contribute to his success.
