There is no excuse to gain weight while on the road, in the air or at sea! I travel 3-4 times per year and end up losing a few pounds during my trips! It’s all about planning your snacks and meals ahead of time, as well as keeping up with exercise when possible.

Tasty snacks you don’t have to refrigerate:

Lara Bars
Pure Bars
Salt free nuts and seeds
Dried cranberries, blueberries, cherries, etc.
Dried raisins
Cacao nibs
Goji berries

Tip: Combine the nuts, dried fruit and nibs together for your own trail mix combo

In regards to meals served on the plane, make sure you let the airlines know what your diet restrictions are ahead of time so they can accommodate you accordingly.

If you are planning to stay in a hotel, try getting one with a kitchenette so you can buy your own healthy foods. Even if you choose to eat out every night, eat breakfast in your hotel room. Fresh fruit, granola with rice milk and slivered almonds or yogurt with flaxseeds are some healthy ideas.

As far as eating out goes, I always end up ordering some sort of protein with veggie combo. I avoid white bread, pasta, rice and other refined carbohydrates as much as possible. If I’m going to splurge, it’s going to be on something worth it such a glass of Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay!

How do you slip in exercise while in flight or on the road?

If you are on a plane, get up every hour or two if possible. Walk up and down the aisle, do a forward bend, stretch your arms and legs, squat 50-100 times and you’re all set! Same goes for long car rides. Hit the rest area every few hours, get out and move around to keep your circulation flowing properly.

Once you are at your destination, it’s easy to incorporate exercise.

Here are my tips:

If you don’t have to rent a car, don’t!

Walk everywhere or rent a bike!

Swim each day if your hotel has a pool or if you are close to the sea.

If your hotel has a gym, hit the weights.

Do some pushups, lunges and squats in the hotel room.

Run on the beach if you are near one.

I always tell my clients to eat healthy 90% of the time. It's fine to have a cheat food here and there. Like everything else in life, it's all about moderation. Sit back and enjoy your vacation!
