Tongue Scraping? That’s the question I asked myself while learning about its benefits during my health coaching schooling. Fresher breath and better oral hygiene? Once I found that out, I immediately ran to my local CVS and purchased one. After my first session, I was hooked. I’ve used that little $4 scraper regularly for the last 5 years now. Such a perfect invention!
The tongue scraper was first discovered in India years ago and has steadily gained popularity in the West. Some of its many benefits include, but are not limited to: improving sense of taste, stimulating internal organs and removing toxins, food particles and bacteria.
Many people probably feel that brushing and flossing are sufficient enough to maintain proper oral hygiene. The problem is the toothbrush is designed to primarily target the solid structure of the teeth. What cleanses the spongy surface of the tongue? You guessed it! The tongue scraper. This lovely tool removes bacteria and the food source known to cause foul breath and other health issues.
In Ayurvedic medicine, different parts of the tongue correspond to organs in the body such as the lungs, stomach, liver, heart, spleen, intestines and kidneys. When the tongue is massaged by this scraper, these internal organs are stimulated and cleansed. By using it on a daily basis, you’re forced to observe the health of your tongue as well. Take note of any changes and consult a physician if anything looks abnormal.
Go back as far as you feel comfortable without gagging! Get into a habit of brushing, then gently scraping your tongue 7-14 times, flossing and gargling with a natural mouthwash at least 2x daily. Make sure you wash the scraper with soap and water after each use.
There are several varieties to choose from. Metal, stainless steel or plastic. It’s obviously your choice. Do your research and see which one works best for you. See how refreshed your body feels afterward and let me know the brand you like!
Have a healthy weekend!
