Bikram Yoga's Many Health Benefits

Many people think being in a room cranked up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit with 40% humidity for 90 minutes sounds like pure torture. If someone invites them, they politely decline. Once persuaded enough times, they give the class a try and end up pleasantly surprised. The class is challenging, but not to the point of distress.

People of all ages attend Bikram yoga each day. As long as a person is properly hydrated and aren't experiencing any current health conditions, they should be able to flow through with ease.
Bikram yoga, created in the early 1970s, was named after Indian yoga teacher and founder Bikram Choudhury. At the young age of three in Calcutta, India, Choudhury began learning breathing and yogic exercises. He continued into his adulthood and eventually created the 26-posture series known as Bikram- which helped restore his own health. This style of yoga is practiced in heat, because it's meant to replicate India's warm climate.

In his early twenties, Choudhury moved to the United States and opened up Bikram yoga studios in both CA and HI. Several years later, he created a 9-week, 500-hour teacher certification course. These teachers must be trained by Choudhury himself. Today, there are thousands of Bikram locations worldwide.

Bikram Yoga's health benefits include, but are not limited to:

* Improved circulation from thinning the blood
* Toxin release from compressing, extending and flushing out the spleen, intestines, lungs and endocrine system
* Increased mobility of joints and range of motion
* Weight loss from better digestion and metabolism
* Stronger musculature
* Boosted immunity from massaging lymph nodes and distributing white blood cells throughout body
* Deeper sleep
* Mood stability from synchronizing the nervous and endocrine systems- which play a key role in hormonal and emotional balances.

Temporary side effects may include:

* Slight nausea
* Dizziness during first few classes
* Fatigue

Tips to minimize or prevent side effects:

* Get hydrated prior to class by drinking coconut water for electrolyte balance or an electrolyte mix containing all vital minerals
* Don't eat anything heavy prior to class (fruit an hour or two before is acceptable)
* Stop when you need to. Sit in quiet position and continue when ready
* Wear comfortable, light attire
* Breathe normal
* Remain calm and focus

Those who are pregnant, nursing, suffering from a heart condition, diabetes, on certain medications or are recovering from injury/surgery should not participate unless directed by a physician.
